Why Wicker?
Wicker is a very durable material used primarily for baskets and furniture. The ancient Egyptians were the first to document the use of wicker. Many make the assumption that wicker is a material or plant. In fact, it really is just the manner in which plant or synthetic material is woven together. It is usually made of rattan stalks, reed, bamboo or willow. However, it is not always made from plant materials. It can also be produced synthetically using plastics, resin or paper wrapped wires. Early basket makers used reeds, bamboo, rattan or willow to produce their baskets. There are numerous wicker basket styles in the United States. Two of the most popular are Williamsburg and Nantucket.
Using the this strong yet light plant or plastic material makes wicker great for furniture that is often used frequently or subject to the elements. It is a popular material for baskets, patio and garden furniture, trays as well as indoor furniture like sofa, chests and chairs. It is relatively easy to clean, does not require a lot of maintenance and can even be rained on. Not only that but the furniture can be quite comfortable and a great place to relax.
