Outdoor barbecues and parties are lovely. An important step in ensuring that your next gathering is a success, is in making the right choice in your garden or patio furniture.
In today’s market, there is a variety of materials that garden furniture is made from. The most popular choices in material are wood or wicker. What is the right choice for you?
Consider the end goal. You want the furniture to be attractive, comfortable, and low maintenance. We often have enough to do outside without worrying about staining or painting furniture.
Wood is a popular choice in outdoor furniture. People gravitate toward wood because they believe that it is more durable. Thick and sturdy wood, while durable, can be “heavy looking” and often requires maintenance. If you’re looking for something lavish or ornate, there aren’t many intricately carved wooden garden tables or chairs out there. Wood also needs to be painted or refinished every two years to ensure that it maintains its luster. When not properly maintained, it can look haggard and weathered. While it is often the best choice for in-home furniture, it may not be the best choice in outdoor furniture.
Wicker is a wonderful choice for outdoor patio furniture. In today’s market, wicker is not only limited to the white wicker rocking chairs of yesterday. It has been expanded to include gliders, dining sets, chairs, sofas and love seats. The pieces are usually highly styled, intricate and ornate. Wicker is available in a variety of colors: from classic white wicker to deep, brown coffee-colored wicker. It’s like adding a piece of artwork to your front porch, garden, or patio.
The wicker furniture of today is woven from polythene resin fibers or vinyl for improved durability. In addition, it is often supported by a sturdy frame; consisting of steel, aluminum or rattan. As far as finish is concerned, the dye is usually spun into the resin or vinyl itself. The piece then goes through a multiple dipping process to insure longevity. Paint is sprayed into every crevice for even coverage. Wicker is also available in a patina or antique-looking sheen. This is known as a two stage premium finish. It gives the furniture an heirloom feel.
Wicker furniture has come a long way in terms of style availability and durability. These pieces add a touch of elegance to any outdoor setting. They will become treasures that your family will enjoy for many years.
