Buying furniture for your patio or deck can be a little tricky if you’re not familiar with the terrain. Wicker is a great material for outdoor sitting and can add ambiance to any occasion. Although plastic and certain metals have dominated the outdoor furniture industry over the last couple of years, buying wicker furniture can be consumer friendly and cost effective. Here are some tips on buying wicker furniture for your patio or deck.

1) How Many Pieces Do You Need?

The first thing you want to decide is how many pieces you are going to need for your patio or deck. If you’re looking at a small patio, you might want to just go with a loveseat and a chair. If you’re looking at a poolside patio, you might to grab a couple of chairs and two love seats. It all depends on what you want to furnish.

2) Do You Want Real Wicker?

There is a good side and bad side to real wicker. The good side is that it looks great and, if taken care of, will last a long time. The bad side is that real wicker will splinter and fade very easily if it’s not stored during the off-season of when inclement weather strikes. If you don’t have time to rush home every time a storm comes around, you might want to think about getting a vinyl-resin wicker material. This material looks a lot like the real thing and will age as fast if you leave it outside.

3) Is This Furniture Of Top Quality?

When you’re at the store, check the quality of the furniture. Older wicker that has been abused and beaten will have the normal wear and tear. This will include splintered pieces and dents in the seating. Take a seat and make sure that the wicker is firm tight.

4) Should I Invest In Furniture Covers?

Yes! You should always try to protect your investment. If you’re buying from a store that offers them, buy them within the same purchase. Some deals will come with furniture covers included. If you would like to keep your furniture outside without bringing it in every night, you will want furniture covers. Your outdoor wicker patio furniture will last much longer if you invest in some quality covers.

5) Should I Try To Put Them Together Myself?

No! Never buy wicker furniture that is not already assembled. Wicker is tough to work with and you can botch the weaving. You might save a couple of dollars, but you’ll spending precious time and money on assembly and Aspirin for your headaches.
