Types of Wicker Garden Furniture

by sladetanner on April 21, 2010

A common misconception with wicker is that it is the material used but in reality wicker is actually the weaving method used to make the furniture, basket or other wicker item. Wicker garden furniture is made from a wide array of materials including willow, reed, rattan, cane, bamboo or synthetic plastic material. People like wicker because it is comfortable to sit on, is lightweight, has a sophisticated look and is durable.

Reed

Reed wicker furnishings is produced by using the middle pith of the rattan palm. This adaptable substance comes in various dimensions and sizes and is commonly found as weavers, spokes and embellishments. Acquired after taking away the external shiny coating of cane, reed is permeable and welcomes all sorts of stains, polishes and paints. It has a lengthwise grain and has a very similar look to wood, however, there is the possibility of it snapping or breaking when bent to an extreme.

Rattan

Rattan has been utilized in the wicker furniture since historic times and is the most widely used material used today. The solid-core rattan pole, which is the stalk of the rattan tree, is used in the building of rattan furniture, after its external thorny layer is taken off. Because of its sturdy foundation, rattan furniture is incredibly strong, durable and cozy. It allows all types of paints and stains and does not splinter, crack or bend, making it extremely adaptable for all kinds of wicker furnishings.

Cane

Cane is the second coating of the bark of the rattan plant, which is situated directly below the external thorny layer. Frequently used in wicker furniture, cane is typically utilized in weaving the seats and additionally for covering the joints. It is generally stitched all over a rattan body. Since cane has a organically slick surface, wicker furniture produced of cane can’t be painted or stained.

Bamboo

While bamboo appears to look like rattan and is frequently mistaken for it, there is a substantial distinction among the two. Rattan has a strong central core and a blemish-free exterior surface whereas bamboo has a hollow middle and unique black ridges where the leaves were connected. Due to its hollow core, bamboo is likely to break more easily and is not as popular as rattan in making wicker garden furniture.

Regardless of what type of wicker you buy you can rest assure that your furniture, with proper care, will provide you with many years of comfort. Wicker garden furniture adds a touch of class to any outdoor setting.

Wood or Wicker for your Garden Furniture?

by sladetanner on March 16, 2010

Outdoor barbecues and parties are lovely. An important step in ensuring that your next gathering is a success, is in making the right choice in your garden or patio furniture.

In today’s market, there is a variety of materials that garden furniture is made from. The most popular choices in material are wood or wicker. What is the right choice for you?

Consider the end goal. You want the furniture to be attractive, comfortable, and low maintenance. We often have enough to do outside without worrying about staining or painting furniture.

Wood is a popular choice in outdoor furniture. People gravitate toward wood because they believe that it is more durable. Thick and sturdy wood, while durable, can be “heavy looking” and often requires maintenance. If you’re looking for something lavish or ornate, there aren’t many intricately carved wooden garden tables or chairs out there. Wood also needs to be painted or refinished every two years to ensure that it maintains its luster. When not properly maintained, it can look haggard and weathered. While it is often the best choice for in-home furniture, it may not be the best choice in outdoor furniture.

Wicker is a wonderful choice for outdoor patio furniture. In today’s market, wicker is not only limited to the white wicker rocking chairs of yesterday. It has been expanded to include gliders, dining sets, chairs, sofas and love seats. The pieces are usually highly styled, intricate and ornate. Wicker is available in a variety of colors: from classic white wicker to deep, brown coffee-colored wicker. It’s like adding a piece of artwork to your front porch, garden, or patio.

The wicker furniture of today is woven from polythene resin fibers or vinyl for improved durability. In addition, it is often supported by a sturdy frame; consisting of steel, aluminum or rattan. As far as finish is concerned, the dye is usually spun into the resin or vinyl itself. The piece then goes through a multiple dipping process to insure longevity. Paint is sprayed into every crevice for even coverage. Wicker is also available in a patina or antique-looking sheen. This is known as a two stage premium finish. It gives the furniture an heirloom feel.

Wicker furniture has come a long way in terms of style availability and durability. These pieces add a touch of elegance to any outdoor setting. They will become treasures that your family will enjoy for many years.
